Short answer

The James Beard Foundation's Restaurant and Chef Awards are among the most respected honors in American food. Each year the foundation names semifinalists, then nominees, then winners across national categories and regional Best Chef awards. Colorado competes in the Mountain region. Unlike a MICHELIN star, which is given to a restaurant by anonymous inspectors, Beard awards are decided by a large panel of judges and often recognize individual chefs and hospitality professionals.

James Beard Awards

How the James Beard Awards work, and what they mean in Colorado.

A plain explanation of the awards Colorado chefs talk about most: who decides them, what each stage means, and how they compare with a MICHELIN star.

The basics

A foundation named for a cook, and awards decided by judges.

What are the James Beard Awards?

Annual awards from the James Beard Foundation, a nonprofit named after the American cookbook author and cooking teacher James Beard. The Restaurant and Chef Awards are the best known, alongside separate awards for media, such as cookbooks and food journalism, and for leadership in the food system.

The Restaurant and Chef Awards have two kinds of categories. National categories, such as Outstanding Restaurant, Outstanding Chef and Best New Restaurant, are open to restaurants anywhere in the country. Regional Best Chef awards divide the country into regions so that chefs are compared with peers in their part of the country.

Colorado sits in the Mountain region for Best Chef. That puts Denver, Boulder and the mountain towns in the same field as chefs from neighboring Rocky Mountain states.

The process begins with an open call for recommendations, which anyone can submit. A committee and a large panel of judges from across the industry narrow those recommendations down. The foundation revised its rules and added an ethics review after pausing the awards in 2020 and 2021, and the program returned in 2022.

The ceremony itself is held in Chicago, and the cycle runs through most of the year, so a restaurant can be talked about as a semifinalist in winter and a winner by early summer.

Three stages

Semifinalist, nominee, winner.

Semifinalists are the long list, typically announced early in the year. Being named is a real distinction and is often the moment a restaurant outside a big city first gets national attention.

Nominees, also called finalists, are the short list chosen from the semifinalists, usually a handful per category. This is the stage most restaurants mention on their menus and websites.

Winners are announced at the awards ceremony. One winner per category per year, which is why a Best Chef: Mountain win is rare for any single state.

When you see “James Beard” on a Colorado restaurant's sign, it is worth checking which of these it means and which year. All three are meaningful, but they are not the same thing.

Beard and MICHELIN

Two different systems, often confused.

MICHELIN awards restaurants. Anonymous, full-time inspectors visit, pay for their meals and award stars, Bib Gourmands, Green Stars and Recommended listings based on the cooking. MICHELIN only covers areas it has chosen to inspect, which in Colorado was limited to six areas until the guide went statewide with the 2026 selection.

The James Beard Foundation recognizes restaurants and people: chefs, bakers, restaurateurs, beverage professionals. It covers the whole country every year, so Colorado restaurants outside the old MICHELIN boundary have always been eligible.

That is why some of the strongest kitchens in the state, including Beard winners in Aurora and Breckenridge, appear in our statewide register through Beard recognition rather than MICHELIN.

Colorado

Recent Colorado winners.

Penelope Wong of Yuan Wonton in Denver won Best Chef: Mountain at the 2026 ceremony in Chicago on 15 June 2026, after several years as a semifinalist and finalist. Before her, Caroline Glover of Annette in Aurora won the same award in 2022 and Matt Vawter of Rootstalk in Breckenridge won it in 2024, and Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder was named Outstanding Restaurant in 2025. In 2026 Colorado also had nominees in national categories: Josh Niernberg of Bin 707 Foodbar in Grand Junction for Outstanding Chef, and McLain Hedges and Mary Allison Wright of Yacht Club in Denver for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service.

Questions

James Beard, answered.

The questions we get asked most about the Beard awards and how they relate to the rest of this register.

What region is Colorado in for the James Beard Awards?

Colorado competes in the Mountain region for the regional Best Chef award, alongside neighboring Rocky Mountain states. Colorado restaurants and chefs can also be recognized in the national categories, such as Outstanding Restaurant and Best New Restaurant.

What is the difference between a James Beard semifinalist, nominee and winner?

Semifinalists are the long list announced early in the awards cycle. Nominees, sometimes called finalists, are the short list chosen from the semifinalists. Winners are announced at the awards ceremony. Each stage is a real honor, and a semifinalist listing is often how a restaurant first gets national attention.

Is a James Beard Award better than a MICHELIN star?

They measure different things. MICHELIN stars are awarded to restaurants by anonymous professional inspectors based on the cooking. The James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards recognize chefs, restaurants and hospitality professionals through a process involving public recommendations and a large panel of judges. Many restaurants hold both.
